QMetry <> Jira Integration: A Comprehensive Manual
When integrating QMetry Test Management (QTM) with Jira, it is important to know how the connection between the two platforms functions. This help document provides detailed information on the technical and functional aspects of the integration, addresses common queries/concerns, and offers clear explanations.
1. How are users linked between Jira and QMetry?
QMetry users and Jira users operate independently, meaning there is no mapping based on email or user ID. However, the Jira credentials are required to log bugs from QMetry into Jira, but no direct link exists between the accounts on both platforms. A QMetry admin account is used to set up/configure the Jira integration through the “QMetry Jira Integration” app in Jira, but Jira users are not explicitly mapped to QMetry users.
2. What data does QMetry access from Jira?
QMetry utilizes Jira’s APIs to fetch a limited scope of data from Jira. This includes a list of Jira projects, issues within those projects, project metadata, and the instance URL. This information is synced and displayed within QMetry.
3. Where is the QMetry Cloud data stored/hosted?
QMetry's cloud data is hosted on AWS RDS (for the US region), specifically located in North Virginia, U.S.
4. What happens If the User Who Set Up the Integration Leaves the Organization?
If the user who initially configured the Jira integration leaves the organization, their account must be deactivated within QMetry to ensure that no data in QMetry remains accessible to them. If their account was used to configure the integration app, the app can easily be re-authenticated with another user. It is essential to note that user management on the Jira side will need to be handled by the Jira administrator.
5. What happens if the “QMetry-Jira Integration” app is uninstalled?
If the Jira integration app is uninstalled or disconnected from Jira, the communication link between QMetry and Jira will be broken.
In Jira, no QMetry data will remain visible. QMetry panels will no longer appear in project issue types to display QMetry test cases and execution details.
However, no integration data is deleted from QMetry. If the integration is removed from a QMetry project, Jira requirements are converted into internal QMetry requirements (which can be deleted if needed), and Jira issues are deleted from QMetry.
6. Can we see which users in QMetry match with Jira users?
Currently, QMetry does not have a feature that shows which QMetry user corresponds to a Jira user. As mentioned above, the two systems operate separately when it comes to user accounts.
7. What amount of access will QMetry have to the customer's Jira data after Jira is integrated with QMetry?
As mentioned in point 2, above: QMetry utilizes Jira APIs to fetch data from Jira, such as the list of projects, Jira issues within those projects, project metadata, instance URL, etc., to sync and display within QMetry.
The Jira app when installed for integration automatically gets assigned to a default group like
jira-software-users
through which it should get the browse projects permission in Jira. QMetry integration app features rely on the group permission to view Jira projects. Hence the list of projects becomes available from the configured QMetry admin account in the Jira through the app configuration for integration within QMetry. When a user install the “QMetry Jira Integration” add-on in the Jira instance and configure it with the QMetry, it only brings all the Jira projects list (and not their data) for integrating with the QMetry project.
Please note that no information/data is pulled from the Jira project until the integration is set up within the QMetry project.
8. Is the “QMetry Jira Integration” app that can be installed in Jira, a forged-based app?
The Jira app required to integrate Jira Cloud or Data Center with QMetry, is the “QMetry Jira Integration“ app. At the moment, these apps are all based on Atlassian Connect and are not forge-based.
